Micro Book Review: The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw

I’ll never shut up about The Salt Grows Heavy. Cassandra Khaw’s writing feels like sitting down next to Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal—velvet, ornate, and gruesome. It’s such terrifying, romantic fun. I listened to the audiobook version from the library while I was in bed with the flu, and any author who can captivate you while you’re laid up with a fever is a top-tier author. I knew I loved Khaw’s work from Nothing But Blackened Teeth and several short stories, but MAN this book lives in my brain forever. A dark mermaid and her patchwork love taking on wicked would-be gods is everything I need in a dark fairy tale. Truly a must-read and one that should have a mountain of fan art that’s as chilling as it is beautiful. One of my favorites, for sure.
